Interpreting scripture happens on more than one level. True, every text is composed of letters that form words and ideas which will provide a basic translation. I run into people all the time who read a text and just don’t understand how it could be meaningful to a person’s life. Their understanding is based purely on a worldly, grammatical perspective. However, there is an essential ingredient necessary for true understanding of God’s word – the Holy Spirit. Just as the Holy Spirit brought the word into existence so too does it work in the life of the spirit-filled man or woman to bring understanding. It is just one of the Spirit’s gifts to an open heart. Consequently, Jesus’ words, through the agency of the Holy Spirit, do not only tell about life … they bring life. Join me in praying today for loved ones who’s hearts have been closed to the Holy Spirit. Whether He uses me, someone else or some event, may the Spirit penetrate my friend’s heart today.

Would you like to make Jesus happy? Not only does that seem like a worthy goal, it is one that is straightforward and direct. Love one another as I have loved you. While Jesus does make this an obligation for those who would be His followers, He also makes it clear that followers who are faithful in the keeping of directive will enjoy the intimate friendship of Christ Himself. Instead of thinking about how difficult it is to love unlovely people … keep before yourself today the pleasure that Christ will have because of your loving attitude.

These two verses were uttered at a rather tense moment. To set the stage, verse 31 tells us that the Jews took up stones again to stone Him. Their reaction was based on the fact that, increasingly, Jesus had been linking Himself to God the Father and the Jews viewed that as blasphemy. In the midst of this charged atmosphere Jesus went even further suggesting that His many good works underscored a direct connection to the will of the Father. While the angry crowd did not mind the “good works” that Jesus did, they couldn’t see the connection between the two. With our passage Jesus makes it plain that His works and His oneness with God were a package. He did mighty works because He was one with the Father – each reality giving testimony to the other. Jesus’ ultimate point was that any rational, open minded person looking at His life and ministry could not explain His works without believing that His power came directly from His unity with God. Even with such verbal testimony, not to forget recent miracles like that in John 9, the crowd continued their efforts to stone Him … but He escaped, for the time being.

How often have you heard people say that Jesus was a good man who did good things in a loving and kind way but he wasn’t God? That is precisely what Jesus’ detractors said about Him nearly 2,000 years ago. It is still vitally important that people connect the power of His actions to His unity with God. He showed His power so that we might believe.

Every line of this model prayer is important and I would never wish to suggest otherwise. Even so, if picking verses upon which we need to concentrate – work on – it probably would not be verses 11, 12 or 13. It’s not that they aren’t important because we need food, forgiveness and spiritual help. In truth, most of us are usually pretty good about communicating to God all the things we feel we need to survive. We don’t need a tutorial on that. The part of the prayer that seems to be the easiest to overlook is that first part – the part where we ask that the Father’s will be the overriding concern in everything that happens in this life. It is a prayer that is, first and foremost, a desire for God’s agenda take center stage. Food takes on meaning as it provides us with the physical strength to serve God. Forgiving others becomes an imperative because that is what God’s plan of reconcilation is all about. This prayer is a purpose statement underscoring the fact that we exist to serve our heavenly Father and trust in Him to supply us with what need to do so.

We live in a world that is consumed by averages. While I am the first to agree that a 99% success rate is better than a 94% success rate, when it comes to people, even a 1% loss is too much. That thought is reminescent of a conversation I had with a lady in the first church I ever served. Although she was happy about some growth the church was experiencing, the influx of new people also alarmed her, causing this remark: I think the perfect size for a church is 200 – A church should never grow bigger than 200. What do you think? My response was simple: 200 is a perfect size for a community of 200. Being safe in the fold is always a really great feeling as long as you are one of those safe in the fold. If you are the one person lost, it is a sure recipe for eternal disaster. Just as the faithful shepherd made the effort to seek out the lost, so too must we.

In this passage, Jesus is talking to people who had made an outward commitment to Him that did not go very deep. They probably thought everything He said was true – just not prepared to sell out to Jesus 100%. The test of real commitment is that it produces real disciples. I like the older translations on this passage: If you abide in my word, then you are truly a disciple. The liberating truth that is promised to disciples is not some sort of secret information but a truth or realization that is bound up in the person and work of Jesus. To combine old words and new slang I would make a paraphrase that went like this: If you abide in my word, the you are truly a disciple, one who ultimately “gets” what life is all about – redemption through Christ. That is truly liberating a liberating position.

I suppose, for some people, truth just gets in the way of their personal agenda. That is certainly the case in today’s text. While the religious leaders go through the motions of questioning Jesus as to being the Messiah, their minds are really made up before He even gets to speak. Even though Jesus knows they really aren’t interested in truth, He does, eventually, admit, in a way that is cool calm and collected, to being the Son of God, which only fuels their efforts to get Him killed. Then, if things could get worse … they do. As is the case at many other times in Jesus life, it is a strange oxymoron to see the keepers and custodians of the Jewish Law purposely rejecting the promised one sent by God to fulfill the Jewish Law. They never seem to be interested in truth, just expediency. Still, even though it would not change anything, it is right and proper for the truth to go on record in the midst of such darkness. No one can ever say that these leaders weren’t given every opportunity to redirect their devotion and follow Christ. Just a few verses later, Jesus will also admit to Pilate that He is the King of the Jews. Again, the Romans will not ever be able to say that the Romans weren’t warned as to the identity of Jesus because He went on the record!

Increasingly, it seems, we live in a world that really isn’t very interested in truth. Many people have a bias against Jesus and His followers that colors their perception and they aren’t remotely interested in contemplating any other options. When I encounter such animosity to Christ, my gut reaction is to just clam up and ignore them … or maybe get in an argument with them! Jesus example in this passage really provides us with a better example of how to behave – actually, a loving example. He does not argue. He does not ignore. Jesus gives them one last chance by going on the record. Yes, I am the King of the Jews. His responsibility was to tell the truth in a loving, winsome way. The listeners’ responsibility is to accept the truth. While we can never make people believe, we should never ignore an opportunity to go on the record.

I suppose we all like to be noticed for our efforts. That is just human nature. I can even think of a few times when Jesus singled out noteworthy individuals for some well deserved praise. (The widow [Mark 12:41ff.] who gave her two mites and the Centurion [MT 8:5-10] who asked Jesus to heal his servant, to name just two.) Today’s passage, however, addresses the other side of the praise coin – religious people making a show of their devotion to God in order to be seen and honored. It is service designed to bring glory to themselves, not to the God who called them into service in the first place. Jesus actually describes that whole situation as a trap to be avoided. Don’t even accept titles of honor that might let you get a big head. The people I notice are not they ones that grab the headlines – I notice the ones that take a back seat and simply put others ahead of themselves. It’s all about being a servant of Christ and His heavenly Father. The faithful servants are the ones who make all their decisions by what will bring honor and glory to their master.

It all comes down to this: Who do you say that Jesus is? Just as He asked His disciples for a response, as recorded in Matthew 16, so too does He want to know our response. Of course, He is never interested in stock answers or answers that might be “technically” correct. Jesus, then and now, wants to hear both lips & heart in a unified answer. Peter came through with an answer that did just that. It is a little hard to capture, with just one language, what Peter said, but I will try. You are the Christ/Messiah/long promised Anointed One! Today, lots of people refer to Jesus as the Christ. I hear His name (Jesus Christ) invoked frequently when in the community, at the movies or at home watching TV. However, in that context, His name is used as an exclamatory statement, not a point of faith because the speaker believes in his or her heart & mind that Jesus really is the Christ/Messiah/long promised Anointed One. Even though it might be technically correct, that usage is, at best, an ignorant slur. It would be just as incorrect to call Jesus the Christ in a respectful manner at church, then live in such a way as to deny His sovereignty as the Anointed One of God. It is that whole lips & heart in a unified answer thing. Speaking the truth and then living the truth so that all might know we serve Jesus, the Christ, God’s Messiah and Anointed One.

This passage is a good follow up on the one we looked at yesterday. Do you ever get weighed down by the anxieties of life to the point where it negatively affects your ability to function as a member of Christ’s body, the church? I can’t tell you how many times church members have explained their unfiathfulness by citing personal problems – some created by external sources and some created by their own bad choices. Either way, Jesus calls that lack of focus a trap because it makes us concentrate on ourselves instead of on Jesus, the Son of Man. It’s not that Jesus is so insecure he needs our attention 24/7. The warning centers on the fact that we put ourselves at risk when we loose our focus. If we loose our focus … we loose our way. There is a reason why you shouldn’t be driving while talking and texting on your cell phone at the same time: You can easily loose focus and not be prepared for what is coming down the road. Whether it is the opportunity to serve Christ or even the second coming of Christ, we need to be free from anything that might misdirect our attention.

Old conventional wisdom says When the cats away the mice will play. However, Jesus advised His followers to behave quite differently: When I am away, don’t get comfortable and don’t doze off and fall asleep. Stay dressed and ready to serve at any moment of the day or night. It is an image of preparedness that was also used in the Old Testament. On the night of the original Passover, Exodus 12:1-11, the Hebrew nation was supposed to eat that meal with their cloaks tucked into their belt, sandals on their feet and staff in their hand. God wanted them to be ready to leave Egypt on a moment’s notice. In much the same way, Christ asks His servants to remember they are supposed to be ready 24/7 so they can answer His call. No master wants to get home in the wee hours of the night and find himself locked out of His own house because the servants have “clocked out” for the night. Of course, the imagery is not really about locks and doors – its about service … yielding ourselves to the service of our Master, Christ Jesus. Not only will Christ, our master, be happy to find us ever ready to do His will, He will, literally, serve the server. Christ may be away … but he will come back and we must be ready for Him when it happens.

If anyone is ashamed of Me in this world … I will be ashamed of that person at the judgement – that is my rather loose paraphrase of Mark 8:38. In a world that increasingly seems ashamed of Jesus’ message of complete commitment to the word of God, we would do well to remember this warning. And, rest assured, it is a warning. I know, I know … our culture isn’t big on warnings or any sort of absolute truth that might cramp anyone’s personal style. We are all about our personal freedoms … doing what we want. But, for the Christian to use that sort of personal philosophy as a justification for backing down on the claims of Christ or being hesitate to talk about the claims of Christ … well, it’s just plain shameful considering how Christ never backed down as He moved to represent us and our needs. Christ died so that we could be redeemed – brought from an old life to a new one … but its a new life where He calls the shots. That is good news not bad news and I am not ashamed to say so.

Most people hear the word peace and think that’s the absence of war. While the world might greet one another with the word peace, talk about peace, negotiate for peace or even give each other the “peace” sign, it has a rather dismal history of achieving any sort of lasting peace. Yet, to the apostle John, peace meant something much more than world peace. He understood peace as being in a right relationship with God, a special gift from Jesus to His disciples. Peace, or unity with God, is the natural result of the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, promised to repentant believers who enter into a faith covenant with Jesus at their baptism. Once marked with the Spirit’s presence, the beliver also becomes the special possession of God. In such a relationship, regardless of life’s circumstances (and Jesus disciples would face very challenging circumstances) Christ’s followers can rest assured that they are in perfect union, or peace, with God. The world can never offer such peace. It is the unique bequest of Jesus and the reason why, in all of life’s ups and downs, we should never be troubled or afraid. No matter what happens in this life, nothing can take away our special relationship with God. Jesus made that promise, then and now, to all who would be His disciples.

Good grief!

To the casual reader, John 6:53ff sounds almost like it could be a scenario for a gory book or TV series. Those who heard Jesus say these things, as well as many people since, find the whole reference rather odd, if not downright unsettling. Of course, they seldom bother to do a background check on the historical events that would cause Jesus to make such a bold statement. The Jews listening to him (vs. 52) should have quickly connected those historical dots. After all, one of the greatest examples of continued care for the people of God manifested itself during the wilderness wanderings of their own Hebrew nation. For 40 years, manna (bread) miraculously fell from heaven every day to sustain God’s people. That bread provided not just for their daily needs but also, because they were alive and strong, for their spiritual needs, as they were now physically able to follow God’s leadership and exit the wilderness for the promised land. It was a vivid picture of God’s care for His people and a shadow of what would come year’s later when the Messiah (Christ) would sustain His people with his broken body and shed blood. Eating His flesh and blood alludes to communion, the covenant meal that Christians partake of every week as they gather together to memorialize the sacrificial work of Jesus Christ. The broken bread represents Christ’s broken body – the wine represents his spilled blood. That weekly time of repentance, remembrance and renewal provides spiritual sustenance and spiritual union with both the Father and the Son. It is a way to keep us all – the church, Christ and the Father – connected in a life giving union. Consequently, it always surprises me to run into people who think this covenant meal is optional. Jesus Himself said in vs. 53: Unless you eat the flesh (bread) and the blood (wine) you have no life in you. (It is reminiscent of another verse: Draw near to Me and I will draw near to you.) Jesus’ statement provides a rather compelling reason to faithfully present ourselves together each week, as the body of Christ, to feed on Christ. It is we can live … forever.

There are two startling revelations contained in this passage -

1.) Jesus was alive and standing in front of the disciples. It should not have been such a surprise since He had predicted that He would rise from the dead on the third day. Still, they were startled, frightened and amazed thinking He might be a ghost.

2.) Jesus expected His disciples to preach repentance and forgiveness of sins in His name to all nations. While none of the disciples would have had any problem with repentance and forgiveness to their Jewish kindred, the idea of salvation for all the ethnic nations of the world was a ground breaking thought. It should not have been such a surprise since it had been prophesied by Amos and others. Even so, that message would not really sink in until much later (Acts 10) when Peter meet Cornelius through the direct intervention of the Lord.

While it is easy for us to look at these historical figures and wonder why they did not pay better attention … I can’t help but wonder if we ever are guilty of the same thing – Being around the words of Jesus but yet not really paying attention to them. Or, even worse yet, picking and choosing the words we want to hear and ignoring the rest. Our goal with every message from Christ is to read it, hear it, pick it apart, ingest it, follow it, do it and remember it.

All the messages from Jesus we have studied so far this year have a similar purpose: They tell us, in Jesus’ own words, exactly who He is and why we need to listen to Him. Few verses are more pointed in this regard than vs 18 – All authority in heaven and on earth has been give to me. One does need to remember, when reading this verse, that it comes from the lips of the risen Lord just days after He has triumphed over death. This is not an idle boast. This is an authoratative statement empowered and sanctioned by the heavenly Father and the Holy Spirit. There is to be no doubt about who Jesus is or any question about the authority with which he speaks. Equally, there is to be no doubt about the mission of those who hear His words: As you are going about your daily life, make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Sprit, teaching to obey everything I have commanded. While that is a bold mission, followers of Christ should be emboldened to carry it out since Jesus, full of divine authority, promised to be with those who do. As our children sing: Be bold, be strong, for the Lord our God is with you!

When reading this passage it is important to remember the context in which it was uttered. After Peter’s good confession that Jesus was the Christ, Jesus talked more openly about His impending crucifixion. That was not something the apostles want to hear. Once again, it was Peter who blurted out that this could never be allowed to happen. Jesus rebuked him with the explaination that his crucifixion was a part of the master plan of God. It was at that point that he taught a very hard lesson: Following Jesus was more than believing Him to be the Christ, it meant following a crucified Christ by dyeing to their old self and putting the kingdom work of God before their own desires. The true good confession is not so much something that is merely said but something that is done as we order our daily priorities based on the example of Christ.

If you are expecting all 366 messages from Jesus in this year’s daily Bible reading to make you feel warm and fuzzy, maybe it is just as well that you loose that notion early in the year. Today’s section from John 15 certainly has a cationary tone about it that will make many people feel uncomfortable. After all, even suggesting that a lax follower of Christ might be picked up, thrown into the fire and burned is not something that most of us want to hear. Yet, we would do well to remember that while Jesus may say things we don’t want to hear, they are always the things that are the most beneficial to us – things we really need to hear and understand. Of course, the point of today’s passage is to stay connected to Jesus so you have no fear of ever being separated from Him – Remain in me and I will remain in you. Just as vines flourish and thrive by drawing their strength from the stalk, so too do the followers of Jesus flourish and thrive by drawing their strength from Christ and His message of salvation. If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given you. Listening to the words of Jesus – meditating on them so they dwell in us – that is the best way to stay connected to Jesus. How else can we be His disciples if we do not know Him? Whether His message is happy, hopeful or a stern reminder, if it comes from Jesus, you can be certain it is a message worth storing away in your heart.

The setting for John 14 is one of turmoil and uncertainty. Jesus has just told his discples two rather remarkable things that were sure to make them upset – He would soon be going to a place where they could not come and that Peter was about to disown Him 3 times! Never one to leave His disciples hanging, His follow up comments are some of the most comforting words in the New Testament:

- Do not let your hearts be troubled

- Trust in me

-I am going to prepare a place for you with plenty of room for all

- I will come back and take you with me

Even with such encouragement, Thomas was still unsettled, prompting a final piece of advice for him and all Christians:

I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

There are lots of things in this life that we do not know, cannot fathom or even remotely understand. We may feel discouraged, alone and unsure about the future. Yet, if we put our complete trust in Jesus, we will find a direct path to God the Father. Such assurance is found no where else or in no one else. Jesus and Jesus only, is the way to the Father. There were many things that Thomas did not know … there are many things we don’t know. But Jesus, revealed to human kind in flesh and blood, as well as the written word, is a savior we can know with complete certainty and it makes all the difference in this world and the next.

Jesus the Good Shepherd … it has long been a popular mental and artistic image. What could be better than for Jesus to know His sheep in the same intimate way that He knows His Heavenly Father? That we would be included in this familial circle is mind boggling, to say the least. It suggests a complete intimacy unobstructed by any barriers. It would not be enough to say that our Good Shepherd can read us like an open book, we would have to add that He understands the life-paper upon which are lives are written as well as the way in which everything in our being is bound together and placed on the shelf of life. That can be very comforting. It can also be very alarming given the fact that our Good Shepherd even knows all the little details in the footnotes of our life that we may have worked so hard to hide from the rest of the world. He knows … and still lays down His life for His sheep. That is something to think about all day long. GRS

Happy New Year!

If you really want to have a year that is happy on the deepest of levels, I would urge you to follow the daily Bible reading guide that I have prepared for you. Compared to the normal, lengthy read I usually suggest, this year’s daily installment will seem quite short. Any one can find the time to read a few verses each day. Still, as they say, the best things often come in small packages and our daily reading packages are the best because they come directly from Jesus Christ Himself. Since we call ourselves Christians, it is imperative that we stay focused on Christ and His directions for life so we can live like Christians. How else will we know who we are and what we are to do with our lives unless we stay in tune with our role model, Christ Jesus our Lord?

January 1, 2012 - Our first verse for 2012 is one of the most familiar verses in the word – John 3:16 & 17. It is about the only verse known well enough to everyone that I can count on audience participation when reciting it aloud in church. Still, the part where voices are loudest is always the first part: For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten son that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. (Although I don’t use the KJV of the Bible to preach, this verse just seems to automatically come out that way.) When contemplating Christ and what made Him tick you have to begin and end with love. Christ’s life, ministry, sacrifice and rule all spring from the deep love of both God the Father and Jesus Christ the son. How do we know that? Because He told us with these propehtic words during the early days of ministry. I guess you could say that John 3:16 & 17 is rather like a Mission’s Statement about the family business – Salvation Prompted by Love.

Because this verse is such a familiar one, the challenge will be to read and ponder it in a way that seems fresh. While I am never big ontampering with holy texts, repeat this to yourself several times today as you ponder the verse: For God so loved (your name) that He gave His only begotten Son that if (your name) believed in Him, (your name) should not perish but have ever lasting life. For God sent not His son into the world to condemn (your name) but that (your name) might have ever lasting life.

DON’T FORGET: Each day’s verse will be posted on this web site at 12:01 AM, so you will always be able to find it here. Additionally, we have provided a button on the first page you can use to sign up for daily delievery of your verse straight to your email account.

Every year I try to come up with a Bible reading plan that will stimulate and encourage us. Some times we read the entire Bible in a year, other schedules have followed a streamlined, chronological read of both testaments and some have had topical themes that take the reader through a selection of books in both the Old and New Testament. The daily reading schedule for 2012 will be quite different as all the scriptures being chosen come direct from one source only – Jesus Christ.

Beginning January 1, 2012 and continuing through the rest of the year, we will concentrate on one Biblical message Direct From Jesus every single day. Some of the passages will be long but most are fairly short. All, however, will contain something extremely important for disciples of Christ to know and ponder. For the person who has trouble managing the long reads we have traditionally done, this new format ought to be quite easy to follow as most passage are just 1 -3 verses in length. This should be particularly helpful to families looking for something to use in their daily devotions that are child friendly. Even the longer passages (10-12 verses) are not so long that they could not be easily handled by nearly every reader. The verse for the day will always be available on the website, as well as being posted on our Facebook page and in the church bulletin.

For those who want a longer read, I suggest that you buy The Greatest Words Ever Spoken by Steven K. Scott. Using his book as a guide, we will be printing a daily reading order (1-2 pages a day that also include the verse of the day) that will take you straight through the entire book. In 519 pages, Scott categorizes over 1,900 statements of Jesus in more than 200 topics.

As the cover states, it contains everything Jesus said about you, your life and everything else! Independent of our yearly read, this book is a great resource for every Christian. Given the many daily life topics covered in the book, I can see it also being used independent of our read when issues, problems, temptations and questions come up in life. After all, when problems arise, the first question we ought to ask our selves is What would Jesus advise me to do? With both a scripture and topic index, this reference guide can provide a lot of guidance to Christians at any stage in their spiritual journey.

The easiest place to get a copy of The Greatest Words Ever Spoken is through Amazon. The hardcover version, shown here, lists for $15.50. Paper back is $10.87. There is even a Kindle Edition for $13.99, which would allow readers with a Kindle, iPad or Smart Phones to have constant access to this topical resource. If you order now, you have plenty of time to get it before Christmas.

This is a very manageable daily read that is sure to bring you great blessings.

While this photo may not look all that impressive – after all, it’s just a few bags of groceries and my family has plenty of food in the refrigerator and food in the pantry. Yet to families who do not have that same type of good fortune, any bag of groceries is, literally, a God send. In fact, under the direction of the AFCC Youth Groups, our congregation has undertaken Project Turkey Leg as a way of sending God’s blessings to needy families in our community. Working with My Safe Harbor, The Strong Families Institute and the Anaheim GRIP program to identify 100 needy families in our immediate area, AFCC is assembling a big box of staple items, complete with a whole turkey, for every family on the list! Because everything has to be finished in the next few days, there is a steady stream of people stopping by the church office with either a bag of items needed for each basket or a financial donation to cover the cost of the turkeys. Of course, that special turkey fund got off to a good start through the efforts of the AFCC youth group as each individual teen personally committed to raise $100 on their own. In addition to that, the youth, under the direction of Hank and all the youth sponsors, have also had other fund raisers to make sure they can come through with full baskets for each family. All that makes the photo much more than bags of groceries – it is a testament of God’s love at work through His people. I am certainly proud of everyone’s effort and generosity on this project and know that it will make a difference in the lives of 100 families in our immediate neighborhood.

Our church recently did another one of its neighborhood Enrichment Fairs at a local grade school. The Fair consists of several interactive booths where children and their parents can try new experiences. Volunteers run all the booths. Most are lead by members of the congregation but we usually also have sections run by students from Hope International and Azusa Pacific Universities. In the roughly 25-30 booths, interactive experiences cover things as far reaching as hand bells, rocket launching, chalk art, cookie decorating, pole lashing, photography, gardening, weaving, needle punch, health, math teasers, lego building, soccer, tennis and baseball, to name a few. Booths just mirror the interests and expertise of the workers. And, as all workers wear a distinctive blue shirt, they are easy to spot.

For the second time, FeliCia was a worker at the Enrichment Fair. Here is her story.

A Little over a year ago, my daughter and I attended the Revolution Enrichment Fair put on by AFCC at her school in Anaheim After meeting the friendly blue-shirted volunteers at all the booths, we decided, while driving home in the car, to come and visit the church someday. Before we actually got home, however, we ran into a store to buy a couple of things. All of a sudden, we found ourselves in the midst of more blue shirts! Several church volunteers had gone to the same place to shop as well. They immediately remembered us and we remembered them. The following Sunday we came to the church, liked the message and felt right at home. One of the main reasons we continued to come back was how welcoming the congregation was when we were new.

FeliCia and her daughter not only feel at home, they are busy finding ways to make new people feel at home at AFCC. In fact, FeliCia is heading up our next BIG Project – The Neighborhood Clothing Exchange. You can read about that in the announcement section of this site. While I am not sure if she will be wearing a blue shirt or not, she will be there and most happy to answer any question you might have about Anaheim First Christian Church.

September always seems like a back to church sort of month. Although we did have a full set of programs all summer long, many of our weekly activities for youth and adults took a break over the summer months. Now that September is here, Wednesday night programs for all ages are back, adult choir is back, young adult fellowship is back, Bible School teachers are back in their classroom and various other service, study and interest groups are back to their normal September – May schedules. As can be imagined, I am encouraging every one to get back into the swing of their regular church activities, as well as look for new areas of ministry they might want to experience this year.

However, if you are reading this because you are doing research on churches in the Anaheim area, please know that September is also the perfect time for a new person to visit Anaheim First Christian Church. What better time to visit than when all our various groups and minsitries are just getting back in the swing of thing? We even have the perfect day for you to come: September 18 – National Back To Church Sunday!

It does not matter how long you have been away from church, what you have done, why you need a church or anything else . You are always welcome to come back to church at AFCC.

We’ll be looking for you.

I know we are in full summer mode when the first wave of AFCC young people (Jr. High) and sponsors head off to church camp. In just a couple weeks, a large group of Juniors will take their turn at camp, to be quickly followed by an equally large number of High Schoolers. Whenever possible, I like to join the campers, parents, staff and sponsors in the parking for a prayer circle before each group leaves. While we have been having circles like that in the AFCC parking lot for several generations, it really is more than just a symbolic gesture. Each camp trip is the culmination of months of careful planning. In almost every case, our staff, sponsors, parents and young people have had to make all sorts of plans and effort to go to camp. Families have sacrificed to raise their portion of the costs while the congregation, collectively and individually, have done the same exact thing. All that effort is willingly made because we know that a week of special study and fellowship in a camp environment can make a vital and lasting contribution to the spiritual life of a young person. While we send them off with loads of best wishes for a great time, our main hope and prayer is that it will also be a life changing time they will remember forever.

It’s always a trick: Keeping all the loose ends of life tied up and in place. While that is true for our personal lives, it is also true for the church. There never seems to be enough time to do all the things we need to do! If we aren’t careful, we can concentrate on one area of our ministry while letting other areas dangle. Maybe it is because of that very reason that I am particularly fond of those church events which allow us to multi-task on our mission, making it possible for us to tie up several ministry “ends” at once. A perfect example of this topic would be our recent Revolution, an enrichment fair for children and parents in our immediate neighborhood.

While you won’t find any scriptural directive for the church to go ye out therefore and lash together poles, there is plenty of motivation for the church to interact with their community in such as way as to be salt and light. With nearly 30 different enrichment booths being built and peopled with AFCC’ers showcasing their talents in athletics, art, music, science, math and, yes, pole lashing, every one of the 450 attendees could find at least one thing that caught their attention – something that stimulated their interests. Of course, we do have some ulterior motives for the event. Studies show that children who have at least one outside interest (whether it be athletics, art, music, science, math or pole lashing) are more likely to both do better in school and less likely to get involved in a neighborhood gang. Obviously, we would like to see all our neighborhood children do well in life. And, if show casing our hobbies and interests can help facilitate that process, then we are happy to oblige. However, I can’t help but believe that the added visual impact of seeing roughly 100 christians of all ages and gender working together to provide an enrichment fair, also sends a strong positive message of Christ’s love. Unfortunately, not every attendee gets to see that sort of multi-ethnic, multi-generational cooperation on a consistent basis. We can preach about it all we want in our auditorium but it is just as effective, if not more so, to demonstrate it in a neighborhood parking lot. Of course, knowing Christ is the very best way of all to enrich one’s life to the fullest possible extent. That fact is bound up in all we do at AFCC … even when tying up loose ends.

Pastor Gene

For some time, our tech team has wanted to post audio sermon files on this site. With the advent of my new spring sermon series, that goal has become a reality. Although the posting of each Sunday sermon is not immediate, it does get on the web site within a few days. This feature is convenient for those who miss a Sunday, those who want to refresh their memory or anyone who might just like to listen in to what is being preached at AFCC. If you want to hear a sermon, click on the Sermons button at the top of this page.

February’s sermons are structured around the theme of Boldly Following God: A Look At the Spiritual Intentionality of Jesus. During the month we will look at the various ways that Jesus, beginning at age 12, began to show His bold, spiritual intentionality.

6 – Growing Up With God LK 2:41-52, 3:21 &22

Face to Face with The Christ: Jesus Embraces His Mission, is the theme of my sermons for the months of March and April. We will see the mission of Christ take shape and crystalize as he comes face to face with various individuals and institutions over the corse of His ministry.

Sermons in this series will be:

March 6 – Nicodemus Meets The Christ JN 3:1-21

13 – A Samaritan Woman Meets the Christ JN 4:4-30, 39-42

20 – Peter, James and John Meet the Christ MT 16:21-17:13
