John 12: 44 & 45

To read this passage, you need to turn up the volume.  (i.e. Think LOUD as you read it.)  One almost wonders if He did not stand on a stool, rock or some other high place so as to make it possible for anyone nearby to miss the announcement.  The one who believes in me believes in the one who sent me.  It is a challenge.  It is a challenge, rather like that moment in weddings where pastors say: If anyone knows any reason why these two should not be joined, speak now or forever hold your piece.  It is another way of saying that Jesus and the Father are one.     Jesus was not just a good man, good teacher and good philosopher.  By recording it, John passes on the challenge to all people at all times.

Daily Bible Reading for February 28, 2012

Today’s special message from Jesus Christ is:

Luke 11:9-13

New International Version (NIV)

9 “So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.    11 “Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? 12 Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? 13 If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”

Luke 11: 9-13

It is interesting to note that Jesus, the one that knew God the best, never failed to illustrate the fact that God is the giver of good things.  That certainly goes against what many people think and confidently assert today.  They describe God as being angry, malicious, devious, forgetful, vengeful and a host of other things that aren’t very positive.  Yet, Jesus testifies to the fact that God is the very definition of love and, just like a loving father, gives His children good gifts.  If one needs proof, all they have to do is go to the message of John 3:16 : God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten son that whosoever believes in Him should not perish, but have ever lasting life.  Of course, God’s good gifts don’t stop and start there.  Equally wonderful is that He gives the indwelling of the Holy Spirit to those that are His special possession.  In other words, the Son of God dies for us and the Spirit of God lives in us.  That reality can only be described as amazing beyond words.

Luke 12: 4-7

In my Bible, this passage comes under a heading which reads Warnings and Encouragements.  The great warning in this passage centers on the reality of hell – the great encouragement in this passage centers on the reality of God’s love and the depths He will go to protect us.  Truly, God values mankind.  He even sent the Son of Man (Jesus) as proof of the lengths to which He would go to safe guard our position.  Yet, the truth of verse 5 is a sobering one.  Fear him who, after the killing of the body, has power to throw you into hell.  There is no human power that can throw us into hell.  Since Satan lacks that ability, God is the only one who possesses such power.  How could He do such a thing to a creation which He values?  A quick read of verses 8-10 gives the answer.  We should be encouraged to know that if we acknowledge God’s son before mankind, God will acknowledge us as His own.  We should be warned that if we fail to acknowledge God’s son, for whatever reason, He will not be able to acknowledge us as His valued possession.

Daily Bible Reading for February 26, 2012

Today’s special message from Jesus Christ is:

Luke 12:4-7

New International Version (NIV)

4 “I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that can do no more. 5 But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear him who, after your body has been killed, has authority to throw you into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him. 6 Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. 7 Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.

Matthew 6:25 & 26

My first student ministry took me to a place that was the farthest point away from home that I had lived.  Even though it was only about 5 hours drive away from my home, at the time, it seemed like a very great distance to cover the 2 or 3 times a year that I went back home for a visit.  I will never forget the phone conversation I had with my grandmother before that first solo drive.

Call me when you start?

Why?

So I can worry until you get home.

While I did appreciate the sentiment, in actuality, it was a pretty useless conversation.  Although she was a world class worrier, all her worry never produced anything but health problems.  All worry does is take our focus off the God of the universe and transfer it to ourselves. If she would have asked for a departure time so that she could have coordinated her prayer efforts with my trip, THAT would have been productive as it would have been done to underscore our family’s dependance on a heavily Father that took care of His children.   We cling to worry because, in our heart, we doubt the love that the Father has for us.  No surprise then, that Jesus repeatedly reenforced and restated the great love of God that is with both you and me as we take ever step … this very day.

Daily Bible Reading for February 25, 2012

Today’s special message from Jesus Christ is:

Matthew 6:25-26

New International Version (NIV)

Do Not Worry
25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?
