Anaheim First Christian Church

Serving as a POD (Point of Dispensing) for OC Health Dept.

The Health Disaster Management (HDM) Division of the Orange County Health Care Agency has selected Anaheim First Christian Church as a point of dispensing (POD) as a part of the emergency response in a disaster. The HDM coordinates the Agency’s emergency response functions related to all-hazard planning, including bioterrorism, pandemic influenza, natural disasters, the county-wide Emergency Medical Services system for medical emergencies and other County health-related disasters.

You are invited to hear how this system works, and the role that AFCC plays in the community.

Please feel free to invite your neighbors, co-workers, friends and family.  This information is extremely important in understanding how the system works and how to get help in a disaster.   Since we are such close neighbors to Disneyland and a high tourist area, many volunteers are going to be needed.  Base on your interest, special classes such as CPR and CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) are being set up to assist in volunteer preparation.

Wednesday, September 15, 2010 at 7:00-8:00pm

Speaker: Margaret Vinci, Caltech, Office of Earthquake Programs

Are You Ready to ShakeOut?

With 22 million people living and working in southern California, a major earthquake in the region could cause an unprecedented catastrophe.  What we do now, before a big earthquake, will determine what our lives will determine what our lives will be after.  With earthquakes an inevitable part of southern California’s future, Californians must act quickly to ensure that disasters do not become catastrophes.

In 2008 Southern California participated in the largest earthquake drill ever attempted in the United States.   The ShakeOut drill is now be a statewide event on October 21st at 10:21 am and we are asking everyone to participate.

The Southern California ShakeOut drill will be centered on the San Andreas Fault M7.8 earthquake Scenario, a realistic portrayal of what could happen in a major earthquake on the southern end of the San Andreas Fault. Created by over 300 experts led by Dr. Lucy Jones, U.S. Geological Survey, the scenario outlines a hypothetical 7.8 magnitude earthquake originating near the Salton Sea, which would have the potential to devastate the region.  How will this affect our lives in Southern California?

The Church In Crisis

During the months of September and October, our Wednesday night adult activities will focus around the topic of The Church in Crisis. No, we are not referring to a problem at AFCC.  Our focus will be on the Biblical, historical and geographical mandates that compel the church to reach out to our immediate community in times of crisis. Much of our thinking on this subject has been prompted by AFCC’s recent decision to become an Orange County POD (Point Of Distribution) Site.  In other words, when there is a major earthquake or the need to quickly inoculate  5,000 people against some pandemic, AFCC will be ready as the place to receive people who need help in time of crisis.

Our studies and presentations on this topic will begin on september 8 and continue every Wednesday night through the month of October.   I’ll be working with Joanne Gray (our Parish Nurse) and some important state and county leaders, to present a series of sessions to help make everyone aware of why we need to be prepared and the pragmatic steps that each of us can take to become prepared.  Please go to the announcement section of this site in order to learn more about the special speakers coming to AFCC this fall. In fact, you can print out a flier about the first speaker and give it to a friend along with a personal invitation to attend our Wednesday night sessions.
